Rooted in Denton:
Celebrating 125 Years of TWU and a City’s Rise

Take a look at the milestones and institutions that have defined Denton’s growth—from its early roots to the thriving city it is today.

This year marks a major milestone for Texas Woman’s University, as it celebrates 125 years of impact, growth, and community in Denton. What began in 1901 as a small institution dedicated to education has grown into one of the most influential universities in North Texas—helping shape not only generations of students, but the city itself.

Denton’s story is deeply connected to the institutions, infrastructure, and defining places that have emerged over time. From the early establishment of the city in 1857 to the rise of major universities like University of North Texas, and from historic landmarks like Old Alton Bridge to modern developments like Rayzor Ranch, each chapter has contributed to the vibrant, fast-growing community we see today.

As we celebrate TWU’s 125 anniversary, it’s the perfect opportunity to take a step back and look at the moments, milestones, and icons that have defined Denton—transforming it from a small Texas outpost into the one of the most dynamic and opportunity-rich cities in North Texas.
